miekecArrived safely in The Netherlands this morning. Survived the >14hr trip (door-to-door) without any major damage. Actually, without _any_ damage. Karin was a saint through most of the trip. Sat glued with her nose to the window on take-off; mesmerized by all the beautiful lights of Boston as we went up, and slightly puzzled but excited about the concept of flying. IcelandAir was good; food quite tolerable, and the plane a 757, so only 6 seats per row, not as huge as KLM.
The only drawback was the lack of sleep. I hardly slept - maybe 3 hours at the most on the first leg, and half an hour on the second. Karin managed to sleep more; over 4 on the first leg, and about 1 1/2 the last bit. Even so, we were both quite tired. So it was all the more surprising that she only had one medium melt-down, and we didn't kill eachother :) The yoghurt smoothie at Kevlavik airport was a good peace-maker!
Oma and Opa (Dutch for grandma and grandpa) were waiting for us, and it was really good to see them again. Of course, they all but fawned over Karin. She took to them quite quickly as well; I wonder if she remembered them from last year November, and this year March?
She had a blast on the car ride home to my parents' with Oma in the back seat. Playing with the stuffed meow-cat and Elmo, and counting toes and such. At the house, there were of course tons and tons of "new" toys to discover. And scatter all over. And play with. And demand that opa and oma help her play with. Which, of course, was no problem :) She immediately snarfed a lot of pepernoten (spiced, half-ball-shaped, nickel-sized cookie that is eaten around Sinterklaas (Dec 5)). And, of course, had a delayed nap (me too!!) followed by a long bath in a "proper" tub. Fun, fun. Now, it's time for some dinner, and Uncle Paul to drop by. Very hopefully followed by a long night's sleep.
