Stairs

The unthinkable just happened - Karin fell down the stairs! After years (oh my g-d, can't believe I'm actually saying that!) of telling her not to carry so much while going down the stairs, she tumbled down them, while carrying too much. I'm partially amused, partially relieved and only slightly concerned. Thankfully she didn't hurt herself badly and was done crying within 30 seconds - mostly from the scare, I think. The stairs are covered with carpet, which probably helped soften the bumps. Relieved, because she's finally getting some empirical feedback. You know, from mother nature, not from an adult. And amused, because she's the second person in less than 24 hours to fall down the stairs in our house. Unfortunately for [livejournal.com profile] nekowoman she fell down the much more painful back stairs (bare wood, steep, curved).

I fell down the stairs into the garage last week. I got extremely lucky in where I landed. A few weeks ago we replaced the sink and the only one was upside down leaned against a shelf. I landed about 6 inches from the sawed off plumbing pipes sticking out the bottom of them. Not cool.

I don't much like falling.

I fell down the stairs into the basement when I was six, and I still remember it. My mother would turn pale even talking about it, because she said it was one of the most horrible experiences of her life to be standing at the top, watching me rolling down into the basement, knowing that there was absolutely nothing she could do. The stairs were not carpeted, but I was completely uninjured.

Two days later I have a couple of bruises and feel older and stiffer than my years, but otherwise fine... For some reason stairs and falling on them has always scared more more than most any other kind of fall. I've fallen enough times to have the fear reinforced too. I think the fear is almost worse than the pain... I hate being scared.

I found you!

This is your S-I-L awaiting your arrival for Bamboozle. Sorry about Karin. I find that the bumps that are scariest to the Mom hurt the child the least. When they walk gently into a table edge, however, there can be cries as if you were beating them with a blunt object.
