Well, it was only one, not 3, but still. Turtle!! Yay.
A small turtle crossed the Muddy River Bikepath this morning, almost at the end near the Landmark Center. It didn't look like the snappers from last year and the year before, but much more like a smaller verion of the painted Turtle I saw on [livejournal.com profile] urbpan's 365-species list. It was actually a lot faster than I had imagined. Nice little critter was smart enough to crawl into the grass by herself. Poking her head out like a telescope every now and then.
Karin was very interested, and actually for the first time didn't ask if she could go pet it. Go figure. We stood there watching it for a short while, along with 2-3 other people (nice every-day intersection of homeless dude, jogger, and city-vehicle-occupying-park-maintainer).

Hm - how long before turtle eggs hatch? I'd love to see a small chain of turtle-lings marching to the water some morning. Although something tells me they probably hatch at night, so as not to be eaten right away...

they hatch in 3 months or so

i saw baby snappers on the boston side right near the bridge over the river at the tstop last year!! :)

oh, and painteds are small, like a dessert plate or tea saucer.
