Jan. 30th, 2006 03:36 pmThis Sunday, on a whim, we decided to stop in at IKEA. We were heading back to Boston, literally passing by the store, and needed to get some lunch anyway. Might as well stop there (rather than at some greasy fastfood place) and have a brief (HA!) look at the loft beds for A's room.
I'm all in for shopping, especially IKEA :) Of course, A didn't like the idea at all ("Can't I just stay in the car?") and J was a little reluctant given his general mall-avoidant tendencies. K was just happy to get out of the car.
So, despite having read the IKEA Survival Guide, J, A, K and I took the exit to Stoughton.
J only cringed slightly as we drove by the humongous building, and into the parking garage. ("We don't have to take the CB antenna off to fit in there? No way...") Once we were inside, I grabbed 2 maps, and gave one to J, explaining that it would be useful. I don't think he spent many brain cycles on it, because he was still looking at the sheer number of people everywhere. We did find the restaurant, with very tasty foods; even a table to sit at, miraculously near one of the kids areas. That way we could look at how K tried to, uh, dismantle parts of it after she had had enough to eat.
Then the Real Experience (tm) began. I had already plotted the shortest route from point A (food) to point B (beds), and just steered us all there quickly. J's panic was rising slowly, but once our destination was in sight, the worst of it got pushed aside. I picked K off the one ladder that didn't have the protective plastic on it to prevent climbing, and then we spent some time comparing the different models. And picked K off that same ladder again. There were many options and models (picked K off the ladder) and when we take a look at A's room (remove K again) we can probably narrow it down to a few. After picking K off the ladder again, we continued to the kitchen area. J felt brave, and wanted to get one or more of the bookshelves I had gotten last time. We had hung it in our bedroom, and it looked very nice.
So, off to Kitchens we went. Through one of their "shortcuts", designed to go more quickly from one section to the other, without having to walk their version of the yellow brick road (in this case, a grey vinyl road with arrows on it). Of course, finding the shortcuts is not the easiest. Nor fighting your way through them, since they're only a regular door's width, but quite a few people trying to get through. Once there though, finding the shelves was not the problem, since I'd already figured that out last time. Including the silly you-have-to-order-these-at-a-salesguy instead of just noting where in the self-serve warehouse to get it. Just then, K decided it was time to start pooping. At least she still wears diapers when not at home (or in daycare). However, it was time to quickly find a bathroom to minimize disaster(s).
.... Out of time. To be continued...
