Murphy's law
Jan. 13th, 2006 11:15 amIt was like one of those scenes from a movie. I had a shopping cart filled with groceries, and a 3yr old by the hand. Holding back the cart by blocking a wheel with my foot for a sec, I was opening the door to the car to let Karin in, so I could then unload the bags into the trunk.
As soon as I open the door, the car alarm goes off. We don't usually set the alarm, so the thingy to turn it off is not on our key-ring. However, just starting the car will turn it off too. So, I grab Karin, plant her on the sidewalk in front of the car, try to park the cart so it won't roll away, and get in to start the car. Which it won't.
Multiple times.
Figures.
So, I reach down somewhere to the left and above the clutch pedal to toggle the switch that can also stop the blaring. Finally! Quiet.
When I surface again from crouching to find that damn switch, I notice that the grocery cart has run away, and is about to careen off the edge of the parking lot into the side of a car waiting for the stoplight. I race after it, and manage to grab it just in time, with only a second to spare. Saved from certain disaster! At least I got a thumbs-up from the woman in the car behind it :)
I catch my breath, walk back to the car, retrieve Karin from the sidewalk (thank god she actually had stayed put!!), and put the groceries in the trunk.
I swear, one of these days my hair will turn white overnight.....
