After careful investigation (i.e. stand outside in the light, and look up) we discovered that the rainwater was sheeting down the corner of our house. Not going through the drainpipe right next to it. I climbed up onto the roof. In the rain. On a slippery ladder. 24 foot. At least I was smart enough to put on my Tevas, since they grip even when wet. Cleaned out the piles of gunk and leaves from the gutter, and noticed that the water then drained better. But not quite. Matt hauled another ladder over, and detached one of the elbows of the drainpipe. Good thing he ducked to the side, because a whole pile of slurry came out of the pipe above. And he had to pry the tightly packed gunk out of the pipe-elbow. After that, no more problem. So, while I was up there, (and had no John around to overly conservative), I cut and sawed off anything of that damned tree that I could reach. With one of those nice, long, telescoping pruning things. I already hated that tree with a passion - it obscures any view from our backyard, creates huge problems, and the owners (business behind us) just let it grow out of control. So now, it's quite a few branches shorter. Hah.

Well, at least that explained the problem, and it's nothing structural. But boy, do I feel stupid for not maintaining our gutters.... Goes right on my schedule for next year: "first day of fall: clean gutters".
