Dec. 10th, 2004 11:30 amWe've caved in. And are getting a new laptop, to replace our all-but-dead current beast. The one where the parts have started to fall off of (hinge covers) and the one we have to open up every now and then to remove loose screws. Funny how that rattle happens at the same time as the refusal to boot up...
So, instead of buying expensive un-necessary christmas presents, we're giving eachother a laptop. An apple. Yes, apple. They finally have a superb system with OSX. Smooth, Unix-based, memory-protected, and (at least seemingly) more compatible with the rest of the world.
Now of course the big question is, iBook or Powerbook. And how much $$ do we want to spend on which "extras"?
One thing is for sure - more memory. 256Mb is just laughable!
Another real "want" is a Superdrive, since you can burn DVDs with that. Which is the next way to go with backups. Tapes just take too long by now...
Any ideas?

Date: 2004-12-21 08:57 am (UTC)Then I realized this doesn't protect me against a burglar taking both system. Sigh. Placed a similar box a my father's, and I'm sending my backups there too now (albeit a whole lot slower, using a 300 Kb/s VPN over ADSL). Since both systems are always-on, it's doable to have both Linux boxes (mine and my fathers) sync at night.
