It's a beautiful spring day today. Sunny, blue skies, temperature of 14C (57F) at the moment, going up to 17C (63F) in a few hours. Riding our bikes to school was nice - even Karin didn't need warm mittens, just regular biking gloves.

What a difference a week makes. Only last week, it was sub-freezing; -14C (7F) during the day. The sidewalks were a disaster, with the snow and ice melted and re-frozen a few times, it was frequently impassable. The roads were mostly ice-free, so we did ride bikes. Suiting up almost took longer than the actual ride. When I rode the scooter on Thursday (when I don't have to dropoff/pickup Karin) I think I beat my record number of layers. Let's see - underwear, long underwear, pants, snowpants, cotton socks, wool socks, boots, long-sleeved shirt, fleece jacket, down long coat, thin glove liners, warm ski-gloves, windproof glove-shells over that, balaclava, helmet. The only thing I forgot (and regretted badly because it got cooooold!) were the new neoprene boot-covers that I had specifically gotten for weather like that. Oh well - cold toes are survivable.

The day before, Karin and I had ridden our bikes to school (and me on to work). Basically the same outfit, except no snowpants for me, and instead of a regular shirt I wore my bike shirt (yes, even when it's that cold I sweat when riding hard). Oh, and Karin wore similar layers, plus snowpants, plus a face-mask, over the balaclava. The only piece of skin showing were her eyes.

The best part of that ride? She didn't complain. Not even once.
