This is almost too scary for words. And to think that people like him actually have a say in what decisions are being made at the highest political level.

Former Republican Majority Leader Tom DeLay told a gathering of College Republicans that a link exists between legal abortion and illegal immigration in America.

"I contend [abortion] affects you in immigration. If we had those 40 million children that were killed over the last 30 years, we wouldn't need the illegal immigrants to fill the jobs that they are doing today."

In fairness, there is something of an American tradition of politicians who are thrown out of office in disgrace becoming intellectually marginalized, if not actually lapsing into paranoia and conspiracy theories. Stories persist that, immediately before he was forced to resign, President Nixon wandered around the White House, drunk, carrying on one-sided conversations with portraits on the walls.

Even the ones who leave office on a high note often find themselves saddled with involuntary unemployment and can become a bit loony as a result. President Theodore Roosevelt tried to come out of retirement as a "Bull Moose" and managed to do enormous damage to his own party, sabotaging their presidential candidate. President Grant, certainly in full possession of his mental faculties during his final illness, was so driven to despair by the prospect of leaving his wife financially destitute that he resorted to writing the only honest and frank presidential memoir ever published, the royalties from which supported his wife comfortably for the rest of her life.
