Noooo... No T running to our stop for all of August, basically. Sure, doing the work is a good thing. But the whole f'in summer? During the day? Geez! I had to take the bus this past weekend too, for the same T repair projects basically. Yes, I'm glad there is a shuttle bus. No, the replacement is not acceptable.
1. The bus doesn't stop at the T stations, even though there are roads right beside all 3 stations (Brookline Village, Longwood, Fenway) we rode by.
2. There is little to no signage. Nor T officials pointing the way. Sure, there was one guy at BV, pointing towards the bus stop 300-400 yards away, not clearly indicating where it was. There was absolutely no sign mentioning a shuttle stop, or any other indication it would stop there. At Fenway, on the way back, it was even worse. There was no official there, and on the narrow strip where everybody had to get out, people didn't know where to go. The driver had only said it was the last stop, and to take the shuttle, but forgot to mention where the shuttle was. Oh, and then you had to haul up 5 flights of stairs, no elevator, while there is a huge parking lot right next to the stop.
I guess I'll be riding my bike even more - rain or shine.

The 14,000 people who travel between Newton and Boston each day on the MBTA's Green Line should brace themselves for a long summer on the bus.
Major renovations will suspend service on the D branch during the day from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. and on weekends from June 23 through Aug. 31.
The work, which will be completed in two phases, will include trimming trees and brush; cleaning and digging new drainage ditches; realigning and resurfacing tracks; replacing rail ties; and improving signals. During the construction, the Longwood and Brookline Village stations will be rebuilt and the Hyde Street Bridge in Newton will be replaced.
The first phase of the work from June 23 to Aug. 3 will halt trains between the Reservoir and Riverside stations. From Aug. 3 to 31, the second phase will suspend service between the Reservoir and Fenway stations.
As a substitute, shuttle and express buses will travel the normal Green Line route. MBTA officials said the agency chose to perform work in the summer because traffic on the Green Line is lighter.

Date: 2007-06-12 07:00 pm (UTC)I can relate to your T frustrations. For a year now they have been ripping up Ashmont station and have as a result have not been running the Mattapan trolley. Even more annoying is that without clearly advertising that they were going to do this they started charging for the trolley when they implemented the new Charlie Card system even though right now it is a shuttle bus. The trolley has historically been free as a compromise for not extending the red line as was the initial plan. They have also been very disorganized and not always very helpful in directing people through the process. It has been a year and there is still no shuttle stop sign at Central and the spot is not obvious.
My advise is take it in stride. Despite the annoyance I have found that the shuttle runs very consistently and I don't actually loose a ton of time. When I traveled with you on the weekend I noticed that we caught the bus pretty quicky both there and back so it might not be that bad.
It seems they are overhauling much of the T this year.
Good Luck!

Date: 2007-06-13 02:00 am (UTC)At least you're not one of the poor plebs that live along the Ashmont extension. We've been having the joys of poorly signed bus service for over a year now and still have several more MONTHS to go before we get trolley service back.
And when trolly service resumes, will it be bright, shiny, new, regular, or even fast like the Green Line? Hell no -- we plebs get shafted with the 1940's pieces of crap. After not having service for at least 17 months, they could have at least forked out the cash for a real subway -- but no, the folks in Dorchester/Mattapan don't deserve that kind of service....
