Three of my favorite movies were Best Picture nominees in the 1960s, Lawrence of Arabia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_of_Arabia_%28film%29) (which won) in 1962, A Man for All Seasons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Man_for_All_Seasons_%281966_film%29) (which also won) in 1966, and Z (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z_%28film%29) in 1969. The 1960s was a very troubled era for the United States, and as a result most of the best movies explored some of the controversial themes of the era, often in oblique ways that could not be presented squarely. Lenny (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenny_%28film%29) in 1974 could be considered a later example of a more direct treatment.
One of the major themes of the 1960s was the sexual revolution and the role of women: The Apartment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Apartment) in 1960, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who%27s_Afraid_of_Virginia_Woolf%3F) in 1966, Alfie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfie) also in 1966, The Graduate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Graduate) in 1967, Rachel, Rachel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rachel%2C_Rachel) in 1968, and Midnight Cowboy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midnight_Cowboy) in 1969. Touching significantly on these issues, although not quite so emphatically, are some other major movies of the era: Bonnie and Clyde (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonnie_and_Clyde_%28film%29) in 1967, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butch_Cassidy_and_the_Sundance_Kid) in 1969, and McCabe and Mrs. Miller (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McCabe_&_Mrs._Miller) in 1971 (which was never nominated for an Oscar but should have been).
There was an enormous number of movies about race, but they all seem dated now although many were excellent. On broader issues of social class, Five Easy Pieces (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Easy_Pieces) from 1970 particularly stands out.
I could go on and on about this subject, but it might be better to do that in person.
