Night Watch

Can't remember when the last time was I actually went out for food and a movie. A real grown-up one, not suited for a 3yr old (I used to like Shrek. But that was before I had to watch it over... and over...and over again. And again.).
This Friday, [livejournal.com profile] hissilliness and I went to see Night Watch, at the Kendall, with yummy appetizers (before movie) and food (after) at the CBC. and beer, let's not forget their tasty, tasty beer(s).

The movie was absolutely wonderful. I tend to expect movies at the Kendall to be "ok", since i'm not usually a big fan of indie movies. This one, however, blew me away. And then some. One review describes it as a cross between Matrix and Starwars. We added Highlander to that mix, since it definitely has elements of that as well. It was beautifully filmed, and even though it was in Russian, the subtitles were done very well. After I even noticed they were there, that is :) I'm still so used to reading them while listening to the original language (usually Dutch subtitles with English spoken), that I hadn't noticed them until S pointed out that they were there.
The story was really well thought out (not surprisingly based on SciFi novel by Sergey Lukyanenko), and the special effects were quite cool. There are vampires, Others, animagi, sorcerers, innocent victims, a vehicle that looks like an animal-control dogcatcher van with a JATO engine, a tornado over Moscow. And then some.

All in all, definitely worth seeing.

I'm glad you liked the movie. I still have yet to see it, but I posted some extensive comments (http://zigamorph.livejournal.com/84029.html) on it yesterday. Do you speak Russian at all?

I'm not sure when I will have a chance to see it, since [livejournal.com profile] cookie_girl doesn't usually like horror movies and is really busy this week, anyway. I was working on [livejournal.com profile] twily to go with me earlier in the day, and I think she might be interested, but she's swamped with class assignments as well. I wonder if [livejournal.com profile] purlav would be up for it?

OK, after stunningly positive recommendations from [livejournal.com profile] miekec, [livejournal.com profile] hissilliness, and [livejournal.com profile] zigamorph, this film has become a must-see. Anyone near Boston want to go? Particularly if you know some Russian (which I don't - almost all the Russian I know is from A Clockwork Orange (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Clockwork_Orange) - gotta feast my glazzies on this horrorshow cine with my droogs some nochy soon....).
