2nd day of Kindergarten
Sep. 5th, 2008 09:39 amKarin and I rode our trailer-bike over to her new school (Devotion), one mile away from home. When we got there, she refused to go to her SpecEd classroom, where I thought we had to go. She crawled into her KG (Kindergarten room) cubby, and wouldn't move. I had to all but drag her out and walk/drag to the SE room. There, her behavior got better some, and she sat down at her desk.
The first thing she's supposed to do there, as I discovered, is to finish the strip of paper on her desk that says "I feel ...". She put the "mad" face there. No surprise, but glad she was able to recognize her feelings.
The head SE teacher (Ja) came in, and reminded me that Karin was supposed to start at her KG class. Alright. Back we went. Now, of course, Karin refused to go *there*, saying that she wanted to be *here*. Sigh. I offered her the option of walking there like a big Kindergartner, or be carried like a baby. Had to pick her up and carry her under my arm to go get her bag from the hook. By then, she decided to walk, at least. Mostly. I hauled her back to her KG cubby (could hardly call it walking, since she refused to cooperate), and put her bags in. Since she refused to move again, I picked her up and plunked her down in the classroom, where they had started morning circle. She immediately got up and ran to a pole/column, and wrapped her arms around it. Refused to let go.
Ja told her she had to be in circle at the count of 3, or else she was going to the time-out room. Which she had involuntarily discovered yesterday already, as I had heard. At 3, Karin was still glowering in defiance, so Ja grabbed Karin, I pried Karin's fingers off the pole, and Ja carried her down the hall. I called after them "Have a good day, Karin", and then left.
Not quite your average 2nd day of school...
At least, some 10 minutes later, Ja called to let me know Karin was back in circle. After her time-out she very quickly chose the option of going back to KG class. Good plan.
