I take it you don't do code reviews, version control, and nightly build checks?
When I was in Lucent, and broke the build, they'd call me up (24/7), and give me 2 hours to fix it. If it still didn't build, the penalty was to roll back my code modification check-ins in LIFO manner, till all was fine again. Perfectly possible to lose two weeks of work that way, and not a single manager would take that as an excuse for not making a deadline.
All in all, it caused me to be pretty careful in removing "unused" tables.
